The Area


The AreaHigher Torr Farm is the ideal base from which to explore all the wonderful things South Devon has to offer. Centrally located for the coast and countryside, the Farm is situated 3 miles north of the market town of Kingsbridge.  Both Salcombe and Dartmouth are within easy driving distance, offering quick access to a variety of beaches, the river Dart and coastal walks.  For the keen hiker, there are numerous walks both on the doorstep and around the area.

The South Hams always enjoys one of the mildest climates in Britain, protected as it is by Dartmoor National Park to the North and caressed by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream to the South - even the name 'Hammes', is taken from the Anglo-Saxon for 'sheltered place'. While it always helps to have perfect weather, it is not vital in order to enjoy the many, varied and wonderful sights, events and attractions that make the South Hams the ideal holiday venue for all ages and interests the year round.

The South Hams has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with its rolling hills, wooded river valleys, patchwork fields, sandy beaches, a spectacular coast line and small picturesque villages. There are ample opportunities to walk, sail, surf, windsurf, fish, ride, golf etc. as virtually every sport and outdoor activity is well catered for.

The AreaClose by is the medieval town of Totnes and its curious shops, narrow streets and historic atmosphere.  Dartmouth being a naval port with Royal Britannia Naval College, the famous Regatta which takes place in August and selection of shops, galleries and restaurants that make it so tempting for that special long break out of season.

The recently opened house of Agatha Christie at Greenway, just across the river from the picturesque village of Dittisham, is a mere 15 minutes away.  Woodlands for the family and the leisure and golf facilities at Dartmouth Golf & Country Club are situated within 10 minutes by car.

The AreaCulture - there are a variety of art galleries and exhibitions in and around the area showing off the talent of local artists.  Craft markets can be found in most of the towns.   Music festivals are popular with outdoor events from May to September. 

Wildlife - Higher Torr is farmed as part of the Countryside Stewardship Scheme, whereby Richard maintains the hedgerows and fields to suit the abundant wildlife.  The fresh water lake at Torcross is recommended with walkway and hide for birdwatching.  Kingsbridge is situated at the head of the Salcombe Estuary and a trip by boat down to Salcombe proves worthwhile for bird lovers. 


The AreaNumerous houses and gardens owned by the National Trust are situated within a short distance.  These include Coleton Fishacre overlooking Torbay, Saltram House just outside Plymouth, Overbecks at Salcombe and Buckland Abbey near Tavistock.

Attractions - Pennywell Farm for children to touch and feed farm animals; Paignton Zoo and Living Coasts in Torquay for wild animals and birds; Marine Acquarium in Plymouth to wonder at; Steam railways in Totnes and Dartmouth; caves at Kents Cavern, Torquay; Cookworthy Museum, Kingsbridge; Sharpham Vineyard near Totnes for wine tasting - just some of the places worth a visit..
